about dance
Urban dance arose in the late 60's. People would dance anywhere that had an open available space: a park, a street or a party. Urban dance is a collective for a couple of styles. Popping, locking, wacking and breaking are such styles. Urban dance evolved from the hip-hop culture. That's why it's such a tight community. Dance has a lot of cross-overs with music and culture. It's a lifestyle. Breaking is the most popular style of urban dance.
the most popular dance style: breaking
Breaking gained a lot of popularity since its debut at the Olympics. Unfortunately it has been put in a kind of bad light - thanks Raygunn. Breaking is truly a sick sport that deserves more recognition. The urban dance style incorporates a lot of moves from different sources. Some moves originated from martial arts and gymnastic. Key elements of breaking are footwork, power moves, freezes and battles. Those battles are competitive, either done one-on-one or in crews. Usually, the dancers only hear the music as soon as the battle starts. That way, the essence really comes forward. It's all about creativity, musicality, athleticism and of course the execution. While breaking can be competitive, there is always a lot of respect within the community.
